Product Description
New Zealand - 1969 - Numismatic Society of Auckland - James Cook Medal - Silver - Cased
This Medal was issued to mark the Bi-centenary of James Cook's re-discovery of New Zealand on 7th October, 1769,
The Obverse shows the 14 times life-size marble statue of Captain Cook by an unknown sculptor which was brought to New Zealand from Italy just prior to 1900 by the late Moss Davis. The statue was placed on top of the Captain Cook Brewery in Khyber Pass Road, Auckland, and was used as a symbol by the Brewery to mark the fact that Cook was the first brewer in New Zealand. To celebrate the bi-centenary several bronze castings from the statue were erected at various places in New Zealand. The original statue now stands in the foyer of the South Pacific Hotel.
