- New Zealand Brilliant Uncirculated coin set
- Featuring the Five Dollar Giant Kokopu Brilliant Uncirculated Coin
Design:
Completing this set is the six 2003 New Zealand circulation coins. Each coin is struck to a brilliant uncirculated fish, with the obverse side featuring Ian Rank-Broadley's image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Also featured in this set is the five dollar Brilliant Uncirculated giant kokopu coin.
The giant kokopu (Galaxias argenteus) has a rather chunky appearance with a large mouth, big teeth and thick, fleshy fins. It is dark brown to olive green in colour, with numerous gold spots, rings and lines covering the back. The belly is silver orange.
As the name suggests, giant kokopu can grow as large as 2.5 kilograms and 550 millimetres long, although they are far more commonly less than 300 millimetres long. The species is both solitary and secretive. It can be found around New Zealand and the Chatham Islands, in swamy creeks, deep holes in streams, and along the marshy edges of lakes and lagoons.
