The symbolism behind the society's 60th anniversary medal.
The large bird is an extinct female Huia, and it holds a shield which is divided in the shape of a letter A, for 'Auckland', with the green part a volcanic cone. The uppermost triangle suggests 'a City of Sails' - a sign of our harbour heritage. The blue and white are the city's heraldic and rugby colours. The three birds are: top left the Kiwi in gold from a modern Dollar coin; the Owl in silver from ancient Athens; and bottom a Tui from the old copper Penny. The Kiwi, Tui and Huia are all native to New Zealand. motto E MONETA SOCIETAS (from money comes society) was suggested by NSA member Dr Tony Butler. Designed by Roger Barnes.
100 medals were produced with 40 in Silver and 60 in Copper.
