New Zealand - Kaimai Tunnel Holethrough - June 21st 1976 (Silver)

Kaimai Tunnel Commemorative Medallion 1976 This 50 million dollar project was first discussed in 1911 but not until after the 2nd World War was anything positively done. It was designed and constructed by the N.Z. Ministry of Works and Development. A feature of the project was the use of a special 250 ton tunneling machine, purchased at a cost of 1.5 million dollars. The tunnel length is 8.9 km.

Medallion details: Design by Waikato Mint and Waitangi Mint. The dies were engraved (by Max Elbe) and the medallions struck at the Waitangi Mint, Auckland. The striking is limited to 100 18ct gold, 900 pure silver, 1000 copper. Aluminium strikings are not limited. Circulated by Waikato Mint, Hamilton, New Zealand.
