N.Z. STEAM LOCOMOTIVE MEDALLION
No. 3 of a Series of 3
The majestic 'KA' was a logical development of the K' which had proved its worth on the North Island main trunk.
The performance of these 1,400 h.p. steam locomotives was outstanding. KA 942 was clocked pulling the daylight limited in 1952 for four consecutive miles at speeds of 69 m.p.h. The 'KA' was designed by V. Gard in 1939, one of these locos was involved in the Tangiwai disaster. The 'WAB' class steam locomotive was introduced in 1918. They were built by N.Z.R. at Hillside and Addington and by A. G. Price Ltd, Thames. The 'AB' and 'WAB' were closely associated with the development of the N.Z.R. for a period in excess of 40 years.
Medallion Designed and Circulated by WAIKATO MINT Hamilton New Zealand. Striking of 20 Gold, 480 Silver and unspecified Copper and Aluminium.
